the story of your life

Today we ask that you know you have a purpose.

Beneath all your daily routines, your trials and tribulations, your conflicts and dramas, your fears and hopes — there is your purpose.

Just as every good story has an underlying theme — your purpose is the underlying theme of your life.

For each of you is a player in your own individual life drama, as well as the collective dramas of your families, cultures, and humanity as a whole.

The story of your life is exquisitely written.  Much of it was set down before you were born.  Some unfolds and evolves as you live out your life.  But the overarching theme — this was set down before you were born.

Every drama you experience, large and small, touches on this theme.

Some people, like the heroes and heroines of romances, must open their hearts to love.  Some, like Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter, must face and integrate their Dark Sides, their Shadow Selves.  Some must let go of judgment and anger, and learn to forgive.  Some must learn, like Hamlet, that no good ever comes from vengeance, no matter how just; others, like Macbeth, must learn that overweening ambition leads to inevitable downfall.

That is what your purpose is.  It is to fully experience and integrate the particular theme you have chosen to focus on in this lifetime.

If you could step outside your life drama, and perceive it with absolute clarity, it would be easy for you to see this theme.  It runs like a dramatic through-line, connecting all your life events.

You would see repeating patterns, which would indicate the presence of this theme.

At death, you will gain this clarity about your life purpose.

But it is possible to have this clarity now, while you are alive.  This clarity usually brings about a deep sense of peace and acceptance around the life experience — including experiences of suffering, and loss.

Meditative practices, in which you calm the mind and bring stillness into your life, can help give you the space necessary to connect with your purpose, or theme.

It is okay if you do not believe any of this.  But it can be interesting to consider.  If you were a character in a drama, what would the theme be?  What is your life all about?

can you love your body?

Today we ask that you love your naked body.

This is an extremely difficult thing, for most people.  That includes individuals who outwardly appear to be close to an idealized physical form.

Even young, thin, physically fit people have difficulty looking in a mirror, and loving what they see.

Aside from all the historical and religious baggage associated with the naked human form being shameful, the human brain is hardwired to focus on the negative.  This is a defensive measure; as a caveman, it was useful to be hypervigilant, and focus attention on potential threats and problems.  Unfortunately, this tendency of the human brain to focus on threats and problems can have terrible consequences.

For many, perceived flaws or problems in the appearance of the physical body can feel so threatening, that it seems like a life-or-death situation.  That is why many people engage in compulsive plastic surgery, or anorexia and bulimia, as a misguided, pathological attempt to “fix the problem” — often with monstrous results.

Even if you aren’t pathological, you may suffer from your own mild version of body dysmorphia.  Most people do — particularly women, who are trained to believe that their value is defined by the beauty and perfection of their physical body.

That is why one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself is to make an effort to love your body, exactly as it is, right now.

Love your body.  Love your naked body.

Love it no matter how much it weighs, how it is shaped, how old it is, or what scars it may have.

Do not perceive your naked body as shameful or “wrong” in any way.

Love your physical body the same way you would love an infant’s naked body, or a beloved pet’s.

Just love and fully accept your physical body, as it is, in this moment.

This is a very powerful practice.  If you make an effort to love and accept your naked body, exactly as it is in this moment — then you will discover a profound peace and serenity that will spread to every other part of your life.  Truly, this is so.  It is deep magic.

letting go of delusions

Today we ask that you watch out for delusional thinking.

Crazy people who commit terrible acts of violence are, of course, extremely delusional.

But there are “garden variety” forms of delusion, which if left unwatched, can spring up into malignant growths within the consciousness.

Delusions always have an element of grandiosity.

Delusional people are grandiose in their thinking.

They may fantasize that they are undiscovered messiahs, celebrities, or heroes.

This usually goes hand in hand with paranoid feelings and thoughts around being oppressed and victimized in very singular ways.

They ride an emotional roller coaster — feeling very grand and inflated one moment, downtrodden and crushed the next.

This roller coaster experience is quite commonplace — but it is a warning sign of delusional thinking.

Do what you do out of love, and a genuine desire to create goodness in the world.

But it is not about inflating your ego, proving your specialness, or becoming some kind of celebrity, or messiah.

If any part of you is seeking this, you are sooner or later destined for an ego-deflating smack down, which you may experience as crushing disappointment, victimization, or that the universe is somehow against you.

People who commit terrible deeds are always caught up in this cycle of delusion.  They believe themselves to be undiscovered heroes and messiahs, and are at the same time viciously paranoid, and convinced that people are “out to get them.”

But most people have experienced the “garden variety” form of this at some point in their lives.  Usually it happens when you build up a great expectation around some situation — like the idealized fantasy wedding, or the idealized fantasy of motherhood, or the idealized fantasy of ego-gratifying career success.  Suddenly, the bubble is popped, and there is a crash.

So just watch out for this tendency.

Stay grounded.  Give yourself a “reality check.”

This does not mean, you shouldn’t have dreams.

Just look at your motivations.  Are you doing what you do out of love, or a desire for ego gratification?

If you can gain this clarity, the experience of life will not feel like such a roller coaster.

Or rather, you will enjoy the ride much more — instead of feeling so crushed and depressed by the “lows.” This is called, gaining equanimity.

Do what you out of love, and a genuine desire to create light, meaning, and beauty in this world.

Then it will not be about “you” so much.  And if it’s not about “you,” there will be much less drama in your life experience.   You will just enjoy the ride.

why supporting others supports you

Today we ask that you support good things.

If you perceive that something helps to create and nourish light in this world, support it.

If you have the resources, it is always good to support good things financially.  This is one of the best uses of money, and you will see this good energy returned to you in myriad ways.

You may also support good things by giving your time, your knowledge, and — best of all — your love.

When you encounter something good in this world, support it.  Even if it is just “liking it” on Facebook — that, too, is a form of support.

In general, it is good to be a supportive person.

As a parent, it is always good to support your children.  Even if they grow up into people who are very different from you, or from what you’d imagined they’d be — it is always good to support your children.  Support them in any way you can.

Obviously, if someone is engaged in self-destructive or harmful behavior, do not support that behavior.  But support the human being.  Perceive the goodness beneath the harmful behavior, and support that goodness.

It is good to be a supportive person.

In general, the more you cultivate the quality of supportiveness, the more supported you will feel.

If your faculty of criticism or judgment makes it hard for you to be supportive of others, then it is very probable that you will often have the experience of feeling “unsupported.”

Support begets support.

So — be a supportive person.  Support good things.

And know that, in general, everyone is always doing his best.   Support that.

When you support others, you support yourself.

restore sacredness to your life

Today we ask that you restore sacredness to your life.

The modern landscape that you dwell in is one in which sacredness has been lost.

This is true on every level.  Architecture, food, clothing, furniture, entertainment, education, medicine, science.  Children are not raised with sacredness.  The elderly are not cared for with sacredness.  The modern world of malls, fast food, and reality TV is one that is largely devoid of sacredness.

Sacredness is not the same as “religion,” though some religious practices do strongly encourage the sacred dimension.  However, many forms of religion can be as empty of sacred nourishment as fast food.

The great movement of your time is the restoration of the sacred dimension to worldly existence.

Sacredness is simply the reverence for life.  It is an understanding that life, in all forms, is intrinsically valuable, and should not be mindlessly wasted or exploited.  To live with sacredness is to live with a sense of meaning.

So, the growing and preparation of food is sacred.  Art and architecture are sacred.  Making clothing and furniture is sacred.  Raising children and caring for the elderly is sacred.  Medicine is sacred.  Science is sacred.  Education is sacred.  Even entertainment is sacred.  In fact, all human work and activity is sacred.

Sacredness does not mean humorlessness, by the way.  Laughter is sacred.  All comedians are engaged in sacred work.

Sacredness means replacing “profit” with “meaning” as the primary motivation for activity.

This movement is already happening everywhere, and it will transform your reality.

Being a part of this movement means working with realms that currently seem very devoid of light.

Sacredness cannot be limited to isolated pockets of humanity.  It must finds its way to your malls, your hospitals, your elderly care facilities, your schools, your offices, your laboratories, your supermarkets and restaurants, your televisions and movie screens and computers.  And sacredness can only get to these places if conscious humans bring it there.

This is challenging work.  But if you choose to engage in it, you will find it deeply meaningful.  And you will be supported by the universe.

The time has come to restore sacredness to the world.  This has nothing to do with religion.  Sacredness simply meaning having a reverence for life, and a desire not to exploit, abuse, or waste life.

Everyone open to these words is really already part of this movement.

too much time in front of the computer

Today we ask that you be conscious around exposure to electronic devices.

This is especially true if you suffer from any kind of physical or mental complaint.

Constant exposure to the electromagnetic field around computers, “smartphones,” and tablets can be damaging to the human energy field.

Obviously, in today’s world it is necessary for most people to use these devices, and they are quite miraculous and wonderful.

But the human brain and body have not yet evolved to fully interface with these devices.

Many people who suffer from fatigue, anxiety, or depression would benefit immensely from a “fast” away from all electronic devices, including television.

Since this is not practical for most people, these are some options:

One of the most useful practices when working with electronic devices is to periodically “ground yourself.”  The fastest way to do this is by going outdoors and placing your feet on earth.  Socks can be worn, but do not wear shoes when you do this.  This will immediately rebalance your body’s energy field, and restore energy.

It is very good to take walks out in nature, under the sky.  It is good to engage in practices like yoga and meditation.  It is good to spend time in physical contact with animals, and small children.

If you suffer from fatigue, anxiety, or depression, you should not sleep with an active smartphone in your vicinity.  Anyone dealing with insomnia should eliminate active electronic devices from the room.

You can also engage in the practice of setting a timer when you work in front of a computer.  Ideally, it is best not to spend more than twenty or at most thirty minutes at a stretch in front of a computer screen.  At regular intervals, get up, stretch your body, and drink water.  This will not only make your body much healthier, but you will also be a much more productive and effective worker if you do this.

For those who suffer energy fatigue, it would be useful to relearn the old practice of working on paper.  Write first drafts on paper, then do more refined or editorial work on the computer.  This may sound crazy or impossible, but you would discover a much stronger creative and energetic flow if you engaged in this practice.  You’d also feel much less exhausted at the end of a day’s work.

People who suffer from fatigue, anxiety, or depression should opt to read books on paper, rather than electronic devices.

Pregnant women should exercise caution around electronic devices.

If you are in good health, the interaction of electromagnetic fields with your brain and body may not be an issue for you.

However, if you suffer from physical or mental illness, fatigue, anxiety, depression, headaches, or insomnia — please start paying attention to your usage of electronic devices.

Cutting down on exposure to electronic devices may radically help many individuals dealing with chronic physical or mental complaints.

what are you doing, and why?

Today we ask that you be clear with yourself about why you do what you do.

Behind every action, there is a desire.

You eat because your body desires nourishment.

There is a difference, however, between eating a piece of fresh fruit, and a packaged cookie.  There are different desires at play.

There doesn’t have to be a judgment around this.

It is okay to eat the packaged cookie, and not the fruit.  Just be clear with yourself why you are doing it.

This is another way of saying, do not be mindless in your actions.

Be conscious about why you do things.

Do you work for money, or do you work to create light in the world?

It is okay if you work mainly for money.  Just be clear with yourself that this is, in fact, your motivation.  Know why you do what you do.

Every text you send, every email you write, every Facebook update or Tweet — all of these actions have an energy.  Do not be mindless in these communications.  Understand what you are saying, and why.

Understand what you are doing, and why.

Do not judge yourself.  Just observe what you do, and why.

This will help you become clear in your actions.  It will help you to be less compulsive.  As a result, you will experience less drama and conflict in your life.

It may seem a little tedious, but really it is good to always ask yourself “Why am I doing this?” before you do something.

Many people call this “setting an intention.”  It is a wise and useful practice.

take off!

Today we ask that you dedicate yourself to something you believe in.

It is a very good thing to dedicate yourself to something you truly believe in.

It is a shortcut, in fact, out of feeling stuck, unmotivated, depressed, or lacking energy.

When you do work that you believe in, that lifts you up out of your little ego needs, and the ego’s desire for security and specialness —  you will tap into a deep reservoir of energy.

Whatever your cause may be, so long as it serves the greater good and causes no harm to others, then the flow of energy will be with you.

If you desire to help people, animals, or the environment — this is good.

Just be careful that your cause does not ask you to do harm in the name of the greater good.

If you do harm, or attack others, in the name of the greater good, then you will have very mixed results.  The energy will not be with you.

So make sure that your cause does not ask you to attack or harm others.

But if your cause is purely good, it will never ask this.

There are countless ways to be of service.  Creating art, for example, is a tremendously good service — so long as it is about creating something that can enrich and enliven the world, and not just the artist’s ego.

Nor is doing charitable work because it means getting your name on a plaque, or having a “networking opportunity” any good at all.  This is a very poor motivation for doing good work.

If your heart is in the right place, and you are dedicating yourself to something you believe in, that does not harm others — then there will be a great rush of energy to support you.  It is like the wind under an airplane.  You will “take off.”

do you watch organic?

Today we ask that you pay attention to how things make you feel.

When you watch TV, when you read and watch things on the internet — how does it make you feel?

Is it energizing, or draining?

Do you feel light-hearted, or heavy-hearted?

How does your body feel?

It is good to pay attention.  To be aware of what happens in your body, when you expose it to energy.

Everything carries an energetic charge.

Some things have a light, or high-vibrational frequency.  Other things are dense, and low-vibrational.

There is no judgment about this.

However, too much exposure to dense energy can trigger physical and mental illness.

If you are prone to illness, or feel debilitated, it is essential to pay close attention to vibrational frequency.

If you have a strong psychic immune system, it is not such an issue to expose yourself to dense energy.

But if your immune system is weak, it is wise to be careful.

That is just common sense.

Activities like meditation, yoga, acupuncture, and energy work — all these modalities help to build up the psychic immune system.

Please know that consuming dense energy from a TV or computer screen is just as unhealthy as eating unhealthy food.

But many of you who are very careful to “eat organic” are not nearly as conscious about what you take in through your eyes and ears — particularly when it comes to TV or the internet.

So just start paying attention to how things make you feel.

And if you are feeling sick, or rundown — be extra careful about what you choose to take in.

That is just common sense.

honor ordinary people

Today we ask that you honor “ordinary people.”

Your reality tends to focus on “special people.”  The rich and famous, celebrities, politicians, billionaires, rock stars.  Everybody wants to be on television.  Everyone wants to be the star of a “reality show,” or “dance with the stars.”

Unfortunately, this emphasis on the special makes it seem like so-called ordinary people leading ordinary lives have less value than the rich and famous.  That such lives are dull, trivial, and meaningless.

This is a lie.

Everyone is “ordinary.”  And everyone is “special.”

Celebrities are no more special than ordinary people.  Really, they are ordinary people thrown into a very challenging situation, in terms of staying healthy and grounded.  That is why so many celebrities have serious problems in their lives.

Honor “ordinary people.”

Honor the teachers and nurses, accountants and mothers, firemen and plumbers, cooks and gardeners, and all the myriad people that keep this reality going and flowing.

Their lives and stories are just as valuable as any celebrity’s, or billionaire’s.

Their contributions are just as significant.

Honor yourself.  Honor what you do.

Honor yourself no matter what your “station,” or how much you possess, or lack.

It is great wisdom to honor “ordinary people.”  If you honor everyone you interact with, even the maids and checkout clerks and telemarketers… you will find that more people honor you.
